Strongly anchored in Lucerne, a city with a worldwide reputation for music, the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester offers a number of annual concert cycles and hosts the Zaubersee Festival, a celebration of Russian chamber music here in Lucerne
The Luzerner Sinfonieorchester is a dynamic ensemble of some 70 musicians and a 200-plus-year history. It also acts as the opera orchestra of the Lucerne Theatre. James Gaffigan has been its principal conductor since its 2011/12 season.
Distinguished conductors down the ages have mastered the art of unlocking the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester's creative potential, and soloists of world renown regularly appear on stage with it. Highly acclaimed CD recordings for international labels such as Sony Classical, harmonia mundi and bis records help hone the orchestra's profile, as do the growing number of international tours: the last ten years have seen the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester perform in 77 cities and more than 25 countries across four continents, so it now performs a role as a high-profile cultural roving ambassador for Lucerne.
