Historic Old Town
Magnificent buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries give the square its shape. On 14 August 1468, a fire almost completely destroyed the village centre.
The reconstruction created the two-part square, which is still visible today and into which the main village streets radiate. The centre is marked by the hexagonal village fountain from 1604, while the town hall is the most important and representative building in the village and has represented the canton of Obwalden for almost 600 years. The fire station was built on the northern corner of the square around 1923. It originally served as a fire station and public wash house on the river Aa.
