Do you know what a moor is? Moors are special landscapes that can only form when the ground is constantly saturated with water. It takes an extremely long time for them to emerge; they are very rare and therefore strictly protected. Mooraculum Sörenberg is located in the heart of such a landscape. It is deemed to be of national importance and is one of the last moors in Switzerland. It is home to extraordinary creatures – like carnivorous plants. Mosses form the characteristic peaty ground and they grow only around 1 mm per year. So it takes a thousand years for a meter of peat to form. Fascinating, right?
Expedition into the unknown
But that’s not the only secret you can discover on the Big Moor Circular Trail. The adventure trail extends over 5 km from Rossweid to Salwiden and back to Rossweid. The unique habitat, its formation, the plants and animals with their different survival strategies, as well as the legends, pictures and stories woven around the moor are the focus of this varied tour. Expedition guests are joined by six experts who have spent their whole lives here and who know the secrets of the moor: meet Wolf, Lynx, Common Frog, Large Marsh Grasshopper, Subarctic Darner and Wood Grouse at the 17 trail stops and hear their very special stories – on the moor telephone!
Explorers on the moor
But you’ll have to uncover the moor’s secrets yourself. The trail stops are interactive: solve puzzles, combine correctly and show your explorative spirit. Obtain precious knowledge from tree trunks, create works of moor art and bring the moor back into balance. And those who summon all their courage may even encounter the moor monster! For real adventurers, an explorer’s kit with special expedition equipment is available at the Rossweid valley or mountain cable car station. A magnifying glass, compass and other accessories will help you collect exciting findings. Plus, you can solve tricky challenges together on the trail and enter them into your “Moor Whisperer’s Book”. An explorer’s reward awaits those with the right answers at the end. But, hush, we have to whisper: don’t tell anyone the secret solution!
The biggest moor waterpark in the Alps
This challenging expedition will need the whole family to work together. The circular trail takes around 4-5 hours and includes wonderful places to stop, rest and enjoy the nature. After completing the trail, you can then play to your heart’s content at Rossweid moor waterpark and experience more adventures. For those with buggies and who don’t want to walk that far, the short Sonnentauweg trail is ideal – and suitable for buggies. Have fun on your moor adventure!
