Directions
The trail starts at the Hohle Gasse, a historic landmark in Switzerland, where William Tell reportedly shot Gessler with his crossbow. This is commemorated by the small chapel that you can visit nearby. Hiking in a southerly direction enjoy the wonderful views of Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug. The path continues upwards to the ruins of Gessler’s fortress (ca. 45 mins). Located just below is a wonderful shaded barbecue area. The trail now ascends around 100 m in altitude to the Alpenhof, an authentic renovated farm / inn with a large shaded garden restaurant and a superb children’s play area. The Chestnut Trail continues practically on the level, with only short ascents, through wonderful fields and meadows via Hof Lantschi – Klösterli – Rotenhof to Greppen. Greppen is a small idyllic village with a bus stop for those who wish to end their walk here. After an easy ascent the path continues downwards again. The panoramic views are breathtaking, directly ahead of you the majestic Pilatus, to the left the Urner Alps with the Stanserhorn and the Bürgenstock, and to the right the bay of Küssnacht. Then the path forks – the Rigi Chestnut Trail continues onto “Zingeli”, where you can soak up the panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountains as well as a wonderful snap shot of the village of Weggis. The path branches – you can either walk on to Vitznau or follow the signs down to the centre of Weggis where there is a bus stop and a boat station.
