On December 26, 1999, Hurricane Lothar devastated the northern slope of the Stanserhorn, leaving behind a 350-hectare storm area with 90,000 m³ of damaged timber. Josef Odermatt, district forester for the canton of Nidwalden, has been monitoring the development of the affected forest areas for over 30 years. Beat Ettlin, Head of the Forest Department at the Canton of Nidwalden, began his forestry career shortly before Lothar by studying at the ETH and also has valuable insights into the dynamics of storm areas and their management. Find out how the forest reawakened after the natural disaster and what challenges still need to be overcome.
