Backstage Engelberg
A monastery village steeped in history becomes a hotspot for contemporary art
A former shoemaker's cottage, an unused bowling alley or the attic of a hotel - the Backstage Engelberg exhibition will take place from 23 June to 18 August 2024 in unusual spaces in the Alpine community of Engelberg (Canton Obwalden). 53 artists from Switzerland and abroad will be showing their works.
Engelberg in central Switzerland is primarily known as an Eldorado for adventurers and outdoor enthusiasts. But this summer, the 900-year-old monastery village is showing what else it has to offer by opening its doors to an international exhibition of contemporary art: Backstage Engelberg.
Whether paintings, photographs, objects, sculptures, drawings, installations, sound pieces or video works - at the invitation of Zurich curator Dorothea Strauss, 53 artists from 17 nations are exhibiting their works at 21 locations in Engelberg. Their works deal with highly topical issues such as climate change, sustainability and explosive socio-political developments, but also touch on timeless questions of identity and individual fulfilment.
