Also known as Lake Lungern, it is the second largest lake in the canton of Obwalden after Lake Sarber. The natural reservoir lies at an altitude of 687 metres above sea level at the end of the Sarneraatal valley. There is also a lake resort and a sailing school in Lungern. There is a campsite at the southern end of the lake.

A proof of expertise is required for the acquisition of patents. Proof of expertise is provided by the Swiss sport fishing licence, the Swiss certificate of expertise or equivalent proof. Persons without a SaNa licence may purchase a guest card if accompanied and supervised by a SaNa holder.
