Actors take visitors on gripping theatrical tours of the museum collection, providing fascinating insights into the life and culture of Lucerne.

The History Museum displays, collects, documents and mediates artefacts of cultural-historical and folkloristic interest culled from the Canton Lucerne and Lake Lucerne Region. The museum prides itself on its topicality and interactiveness. Theatrical interventions, exhibitions and events all conspire to bring the cultural history of the region to life.

Gripping theatrical tours

Every day, actors conduct theatrical tours with a cultural-historical orientation. The tours last 40 minutes and start at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Individual visits

Boasting 3,000 or so artefacts, the permanent exhibition is based on an innovative display warehouse concept, whereby every item is assigned a bar code. Visitors scan the bar codes with a handheld scanner to learn about the item and take a trip through the cultural history of Central Switzerland.

The Danse Macabre on the Spreuer Bridge

The dead are dancing on the Spreuer Bridge. It was in 1637 that Caspar Meglinger completed his baroque cycle of paintings showing in no uncertain terms the transience of life and prevalence of death. Death comes to everyone. The young and the old. The nun and the Pope. The aristocrat and the servant girl.

The audio guide to the Danse Macabre takes visitors on a journey through the History Museum via the Spreuer Bridge to Mühlenplatz and back. The historical commentary is accompanied by impactful music.
