This MTB tour follows the historic Gotthard mule track through the Uri uplands and into the Urseren valley to Andermatt. Look out for the achievements of the railway pioneers from the 19th century as well as idyllically situated mountain dwellings.
Starting at Amsteg, after a short climb you follow the Gotthard mule track, past avalanche protection niches of the "Brisch Laui" to Meitschligen. From the eastern flank of the valley between Gurtnellen and Wassen, you have a good view of the trains that wind their way over bridges, viaducts and through spiral and horseshoe tunnels through the upper Reuss valley. Behind Wattingen you pedal under the canopy of the St. Josef Chapel, which dates from the 18th century. You continue along a magnificent forest path via Neiselental to Göschenen. The historic Gotthard mule track hugs the steep cliffs of the Schöllenen gorge to the Teufelsbrücke bridge and the Suvorov monument. Dismount here to observe the wild Gotthard Reuss, which has eaten its way into the tough Gotthard granite over the centuries. After the Urnerloch, the first tunnel to be built in the Alps, you reach the Urseren valley and Andermatt, where you turn back. The return leg follows the main road to Gurtnellen village, followed by an attractive descent over field paths to Meitschligen, after which you follow the same route as before to return to Amsteg.
Note(s)
The tour is waymarked no. 406 all the way.
