The Kernwald forms the legendary forest separating Obwalden and Nidwalden. A prehistoric landslide from the Stanserhorn created a unique topography in it.

Following well-marked paths, you regularly come across a Chärwald robber who tells his own story. The route leads past diverse colourful species of plants and trees to idyllically situated Lake Gerzen. Information panels provide details of the history and customs of ancient times. The adventure trail is a highlight for children. At all twelve posts, they can get to grips with the Chärwald robbers by hunting for treasure in the hidden treasure chest, building a tower with wooden blocks or throwing pine cones at a target. They will enjoy romping around in the great outdoors. A large picnic area with sheltered seating invites you to barbecue and relax. Dry firewood is also available.

The adventure trail starts at Chabisstein; it can be reached by PostBus and is located near the Paradiesli animal shelter on Kernserstrasse between Ennetmoos and Kerns.

Additional information

Kernwald

The Kernwald forms the legendary border forest between the two half-cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden in the former legacy canton of Unterwalden. A prehistoric landslide from the Stanserhorn created a unique topography in the Kernwald. The Kernwald is also mentioned in stories and legends. Thanks to its uniqueness, it ranks amongst Switzerland's landscapes of national importance.

Lake Gerzen

Lake Gerzen is a very special lake: it has neither inflow nor outflow, as it is fed only by groundwater. The lake and its surroundings lie in a cantonal nature conservation zone, so certain rules of conduct must be observed.
