The cross-country ski circuit to Tannalp runs through hilly terrain and, thanks to its altitude, is considered very snow-sure. In addition to the view of the Obwalden mountain peaks, the ice fishermen on the frozen lakes along the route are also fascinating.

The entrance to the cross-country ski circuit is right next to the Panorama Lift by Lake Melch. Before strapping on the skis, it is worth taking the short lift ride up to the viewing platform forty metres above the lake. At the top, a view of the impressive Obwalden mountain panorama awaits, flanked on the east side by the Titlis and extending over the Wendenstöcke and Balmeregghorn to the Brünighaupt on the west side. Below, at a dizzying depth, lies the lake.

The circuit to Tannalp and back is peppered with easy ascents and descents. At the foot of the Bonistock, the circuit first leads along Lake Tannen to the hamlet of Tannalp. What you won't find here, despite the name, are coniferous trees. Where cows spend their alpine summer, in winter you will find a pristine, treeless landscape with views of the Engstlenalp and tne Gen valley.

If you don't want to complete the long circuit in one go, you can take a break at the Berggasthaus Tannalp or pause for a prayer at the chapel next door before returning to Melchsee-Frutt. A second chapel is reached very shortly before the destination. Situated on a peninsula in the reservoir, the Melchsee chapel is a real eye-catcher. You might even catch sight of an unusual sport being practised on the two frozen lakes along the route: Frutt is a mecca for ice fishermen.
